Recent Wildlife Encounters at Seaview

In the last week the park may have quietened down due to the School term times, but we have still had the pleasure of many fun Encounters over the past week.

Phillip Williams visited the Park on Saturday 8th September for his Keeper for a Day experience which had been purchased for him by his wife as a Christmas present

On Sunday we had two Meerkat Encounters, the first was Finlay Evemy’s Meerkat Encounter.

And secondly that day was Marion’s experience to meet and feed our mischevious Meerkats!

Jane and Nick where next up on Monday for their Combo Encounter.

They decided to book after hearing a good review from a friend who has already participated in a VIP Experience here at the park.

And last but definitely not least, we welcomed Al Wyman with his carer Tim, both regular visitors to the Park, Al joined us for his yearly 'Keeper For a Day' treat.

Although Al enjoyed the whole day, the highlight this year was feeding the ‘Lower Lake’, and meeting ‘Damien’ our hand reared Green-Crested Touraco.

Thank you again to everyone who participated in all our Encounters to date, we look forward to welcoming many more visitors over the remaining weeks of opening of our 2012 season.  We close on November 4th!

September and October – look out - DUCK!!

Last year we introduced visitors to our frenzy of duck feeding down at the Lower Lake during September and October.  We’re doing the same again this year!  Free duck grain is handed out to visitors who are at the lakeside so that everyone can join in!  Meet at the Park’s Lower Lake daily at about 3.10pm - straight after the Otter feeding – and surround yourself with hundreds of friendly, greedy, ducks and geese of all sizes, shapes and colours (and sometimes swans and guinea fowl too) – its an amazing spectacle for all ages  - so come and enjoy!

The last of the summer holiday Wildlife Encounters

The summer holidays are drawing to a close this week.  We’ll really miss the busy schedule of summer Wildlife Encounter bookings – but are looking forward to welcoming those guests who are not restricted to school holiday times.  We’re offering One-on-One Wildlife Encounters right through to 4th November (when we close for the winter months).  So, why not treat yourself or someone you love today? Just click on:http://www.seaviewwildlife.com/summary/wildlife_encounters/.
Here are a few images captured during this week’s Wildlife Encounters - fabulous late summer weather, clear blue skies and warm sunshine:
Sean Maguire was Keeper for a Day with us on Monday 3rd September:

Poppy Methold (aged 9) had a Junior Wildlife Experience at the Park on Tuesday 4th September – a belated birthday treat from her Mum.

Dawn and Kevin Fender are keen animal enthusiasts and treated themselves to being “Keepers for a Day” on Tuesday 4th September:

Yesterday (Wednesday 5th September) we welcomed Kate Wilkinson from Middlesborough as Keeper for a Day with us – Kate loved it – said if she were a little younger she’d seriously consider a change of career!
A special thank you to those guests who have experienced the wonder of a Wildlife Encounter with us this summer and have then taken the time to write or email their warm words of thanks!

Mr Rattie – the stowaway!

Well, what a surprise!  One of the Keepers opened up the box that arrived containing our latest order of mealworms to be greeted by … a stowaway baby rat!  The young rodent must have crawled into the outer box containing our mealworm order before it left the supplier in Cambridgeshire (the company also breeds and supplies various species of animals, including rats and mice!)

It would seem that ‘Mr Rattie’ (as he’s become known) chose to take refuge in the box despite being able to escape through large ventilation holes if he’d wanted to.  Mr Rattie then travelled across England by road, across the Solent by Hovercraft and was finally collected and brought to Seaview Wildlife Encounter before being discovered.  You can imagine our surprise when greeted by the eager young face of a very cute “fancy rat” (this is the most common type of pet rat, otherwise known as a domesticated brown rat (Rattus norvegicus)

Mr Rattie has become an instant hit with the Animal Care Team!  So much so that we’ve decided to keep him – perhaps to add to our interactive collection of animals in ‘Pets Corner’.  We’ve spoken to Simon of Simon’s Rodents who supplied us with the unexpected gift and he has kindly offered to send Mr Rattie a friend at no charge (these are sociable animals needing the company of other rats in order to thrive).  In the meantime, Mr Rattie is being temporarily housed in a bird cage, spoilt with all manner of tasty, nutritious treats and being taken home to to different Keepers’ houses at night for sleep-overs and cuddles!

All new Penguin plumage – the moult is finally over!

We’ve blogged a couple of times this summer about how slow the moulting period has been for our Humboldt Penguins this year – and now, at last , they’ve all finished and finally have the most beautiful new feathers to show off.  The colony is looking ultra chic and on top form – it’s almost as though the Penguins are dressed in tuxedos, on their way to a very smart event!  I’ve included two photos taken yesterday showing Dippy and Desmond with their streamlined, proud new look!

Lovely card received today

“Dear Jules and all the staff at Seaview Wildlife Encounter,
We wanted to write and thank you for the amazing time that we spent with you on our ‘Wildest Date’!
It was a wonderful experience, definitely the highlight of our holiday and a perfect way to celebrate our 1st anniversary together.  Everything from the welcome we received to our lunch was brilliant, and spending time so close with the animals was just awesome!
Our day with you was better than we could have imagined and we will definitely be back soon.
From Hannah Cope and Tom Easthope.”
