Flamingo Images

Hello!
We visited your gorgeous park a couple of weeks ago in the pouring down rain.
We love it there!
My nephew was mesmerised by your beautiful flamingoes, as he loves flamingoes.
Would it possible to put up some pictures of them please, then I can tag him to see them?! Many thanks, Sarah X

Chilean Flamingos have started to lay their first eggs of the 2015 season

Our group of Chilean Flamingos are prolific breeders and we have a very successful breeding group at the Park.  We have been getting around 18 healthy chicks per season , perfectly hatched and in good health.

WWP_0410-Edit
Chilean Flamingos breed in colonies and after courtship rituals of synchronized dancing, preening, neck stretching and honking they mate during April and May.

IMG_8204-Edit-Edit

They produce one chalky white egg that is laid on a mud mound .   Both parents incubate the egg which takes 27 - 31 days to hatch. They will defend their nest during the breeding season, otherwise they are non-territorial.

SSP_4835

After the chick first hatches they are fed a substance called "crop milk" which comes from the parents' upper digestive tract. Either parent can feed the chick this way and other flamingos can act as foster feeders. When the chicks are old enough to walk they gather together in creches that are watched over by a few adult birds. By the time young flamingos reach 3 - 5 years of age they will have reached sexual maturity and gained their full adult plumage.

2014 SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE

Lovely card and presents for the staff dropped in on our last day of opening

" This is just to say a big thank you to the WHOLE team at Seaview. I have had so much pleasure from having my season pass this year and part of that is down to the amazing team of staff as well as all the animals. Coming here is like stopping the world and getting off, just for a few hours.

A big thank you to the animal care team who made my Keeper For A Day such a brilliant experience and of course Sally (it wouldn't be the same without you)

Hope to see you all next season - Merry Xmas and Happy New Year "

A Discovery in the Harvest Mice Enclosure!

Our first babies - 16 June 10 aged approx 11 days - CopyWhen cleaning one of our Harvest Mice enclosures this week, the keepers were delighted to find some incredibly cute baby mice hidden inside the nest!
The adult mice build their nests from materials they collect up such as the hay and leaves provided for them inside the enclosure.
The baby mice are born pink after a gestation of between 18 - 21 days. They will then start venturing out of the nest to start exploring at approximately 10 -12 days of age. Once the youngsters are around 8 weeks old they'll be fully weaned and independent!
Once at this stage, they will be moved into a nursery enclosure where they will stay for around 3 - 4 weeks before being housed into same-sex groups in the main enclosures. By separating the males and females we are able to control any indiscriminate breeding.
The adult harvest mice are only around 3-4cm in size so you can imagine how tiny their babies are!

The Biggest Baddest Bucket List - Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is encouraging entries into My Destination’s recently launched global competition, by offering their own ISLE OF WIGHT COMPETITION… read on to find out why and how to enter...

Heard of The Biggest, Baddest Bucket List?

My Destination’s Biggest Baddest Bucket List launched on 28th January 2013. Since then, there has been an incredible buzz going around the global travel community, who are now talking about ‘the world’s biggest ever travel competition’.
The prize is an amazing all expenses paid trip around the world – Six Months – Six Continents! The winner will choose at least 25 destinations from the My Destination network, meeting the ‘local experts’ and being able to tick off loads of awesome activities from their own bucket list. They’ll be blogging as they go so that we can all follow their adventure! As if that’s not enough, when the winner arrives home they’ll receive $50,000… about £32,000!
To enter, you have to simply make a video about a destination of your choice – it can be your home town if you like, or maybe your favourite holiday destination? It just needs to be somewhere that you know well. Submit the video, along with a short blog and some photos, then spread the word and start getting votes!
It will take a little time and thought, but we hear that lots of excited people are already preparing their videos and blogs, so we expect the entries to start flowing in soon!  Entrants have until 31st March 2013 to enter but get filming ASAP to give yourself plenty of time to get lots of votes. It's not all about votes though...  5 of the 'top 10' will instead be chosen by staff at My Destination HQ and Ben Southall - winner of 'The Best Job in the World'... make sure you get noticed with your super-star personality and reporting skills!
So, tell everyone who you know would LOVE this fantastic opportunity!

Isle of Wight Competition

When My Destination Isle of Wight told the Isle of Wight Tourist Board Visit Isle of Wight and local ferry company Wightlink about The Biggest Baddest Bucket list, they were just as excited as us and have decided to get involved.
Why? Well just like us, they can see that this global competition could be a fantastic way to spread the word about our beautiful island. Imagine if the Isle of Wight could encourage lots of video entries about the Isle of Wight, which will be viewed and voted for by people all over the world? Even better, imagine if the Isle of Wight video gets to the top 10 or even wins?!
So, how is the Isle of Wight encouraging video entries about the island?
This Isle of Wight is running its own mini competition, with an additional local prize for all video entries about the Isle of Wight. The Isle of Wight competition is designed to encourage as many Isle of Wight video entries as possible!
(However, the ‘mini competition’ is completely separate from The Biggest Baddest Bucket List and will therefore in no way influence the outcome of the global competition.)
The Prize
Tom’s Eco Lodge is a luxury camping experience (also known as ‘glamping’) on the Isle of Wight. These outstanding lodges are perfect for extremely comfortable outdoor living, packed full of all the home comforts and facilities you will need for a care-free, wonderful holiday. DUCK FEEDING FRENZY

DSC_7735DSC_7745DSC_7813
With no visitors to feed the ducks during our closed winter period the frenzy each morning at the lower lake is a sight to behold!  The noise alone is crazy with geese honking and chasing the keepers with the buckets of grain, ducks quacking and splashing in the water fighting each other for every morsel,  the Park clowns the guinea fowl run crazily around  jumping in the buckets to get at the food.
We have to feed quite a lot this time of year and when it gets a lot colder   even more so!  They always put a smile on the Keepers faces even when it is cold and grey.

Last Wildlife Encounters for 2012

This weekend saw the last of this season’s Wildlife Encounters.  We’re going to miss all our visitors and I’ll especially miss sharing the special close-up Wildlife Encounters with our VIP guests (adults and children alike) – thank you for choosing Seaview Wildlife as your special venue for an exclusive close encounter with Penguins, Meerkats and other exotic animals!  The Animal Care Team are looking forward to welcoming you back again next year … don’t forget to book early for your 2013 Encounter to avoid disappointment!

India Shakespear and Isabella Green (pictured below), had a Junior Wildlife Experience with us  on Saturday – celebrating Bella’s 12th birthday!

Jade Bennett (below) was a Keeper for a Day at the Park this weekend – this was her 12th birthday present.  Jade said she particularly loved her close-up time with the Meerkats.

And last, but certainly not least, Zara Napier (below), who had her second Junior Wildlife Experience of 2012 with us this weekend.  We hope to welcome you back again next year Zara!
